Ph.D. Program Introduction to the Ph.D. Program, Department of East Asian Studies I. The Ph.D. program in the Department of East Asian Studies was officially established in the 2017 academic year. Its objective is to respond to the multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary trends in the humanities and social sciences, aiming to build a highly competitive academic unit. Following the integration of the Master's programs of the Department of East Asian Studies and the Graduate Institute of Political Science in the 2016 academic year, this Ph.D. program was built upon the foundation of the former Ph.D. program in Political Science. It has since further refined its research directions, broadened its research horizons, and strengthened its faculty roster. II. Driven by the trend of glocalization, the rise of East Asia (including Southeast Asia), and the emergence of related regional issues, East Asian regional studies have gained increasing prominence in the academic community. Therefore, our Ph.D. program serves as an integrated discipline combining Sinology/Chinese cultural studies with political economy research, representing an innovative direction for cultivating advanced research professionals. III. The core development of the program revolves around the interdisciplinary regional study of Sinological culture and political economy. With Taiwan as a central standpoint, our research focuses on the state, society, history, and culture within the East Asian region. Major research fields include: East Asian Culture and Thought, Cultural Industries and Their Applications, East Asian Political Economy and Cross-Strait Relations, and Globalization and Governance. IV. Graduates of the program are awarded a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Social Sciences.
